Forest School Family Session – All Ages Welcome!
Are you looking for a unique and engaging way to spend quality time with your family? Consider attending a forest school family session! These sessions offer a wonderful opportunity for families to connect with nature, engage in creative play, and learn valuable skills in a natural setting.
Forest School Family Session: What to Expect
At a forest school family session, you can expect to spend time outdoors in a private woodland area. These sessions are led by Sarah, an experienced teacher and forest school leader who will facilitate experiences that encourage exploration, creativity, and hands-on learning. Families will have the opportunity and option to engage in nature-based activities such as building shelters, creating nature art, identifying plant and animal species, and participating in group games and challenges.
We meet in the field, where you can park your car, at 9.50am. At 10.00am we head off together in to the woods. Once in the woodland you can join in with different forest school experiences such as mud kitchen play, den building, tool use and fire building skills. You can also choose to relax in a hammock and just be. The session will finish at 11.30am.
Adults are responsible for their own children at all times.
Nature Play: The Importance of Hands-On Learning
Nature play is a key component of forest school family sessions. This type of play allows children and adults to connect with the natural world, develop a sense of wonder and curiosity, and engage in sensory experiences that promote creativity and imagination. Through hands-on activities such as digging in the soil, climbing trees, and exploring natural materials, participants can develop important skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, and resilience.
How can participating in nature play benefit families?
Nature play can strengthen family bonds as parents and children work together to solve challenges, explore new environments, and learn from each other’s experiences. By engaging in nature-based activities, families can create lasting memories and develop a shared appreciation for the beauty and complexity of the natural world. Additionally, spending time outdoors has been shown to have numerous health benefits, such as reducing stress, improving mood, and promoting physical activity.
Scaffold Learning Through Interests
One of the unique aspects of forest school family sessions is the emphasis on scaffolding learning through children’s interests. Our Foresteers Educators observe and listen to children as they explore their environment, then tailor experiences to build on their natural curiosity and enthusiasm. By following children’s lead and allowing them to take the lead in their learning, we can create rich and meaningful learning opportunities that are engaging, relevant, and child-centered. This hands-on approach allows children to deepen their understanding of the natural world while developing important skills such as critical thinking, observation, and communication.
